Ennis Schools Receives Workplace Safety Award

Every year the MSGIA recognizes one its members for a job extremely well done through its annual Gary Griffith Award for Excellence in Workplace Safety.

Gary was the founding father of the MSGIA program back in 1989 and was a true champion for all aspects of workplace safety in Montana Public Schools.

This year’s award is provided to the Ennis Public Schools for their systematic, consistent, and very effective workplace safety programs used in their school district.

Ennis has been able to create a successful workplace safety culture in their school district by communicating well, placing an emphasis on regular employee training, and keeping a keen eye on facility maintenance and upkeep.

Superintendent Casey Klasna stated the district excels in workplace safety because everyone is involved:

  • Each of the employee groups at the district has a part to play.

  • Our school board prioritizing facility upkeep.

  • Our community supports building reserve levies to keep facilities in excellent condition.

  • Our transportation team keeps our fleet in peak working order.

  • Our maintenance team does an extraordinary job with the tough weather conditions we experience in Ennis and while taking care of themselves by working at a reasonable pace, using eye and ear protection when operating equipment and being cautious and smart above heavy jobs.

Superintendent Klasna went on to explain Ennis gets great support from its business partners as well:

  • Bruco, a cleaning supply company, provides specialty training on cleaning products and uses for the maintenance team;

  • MSGIA provides a wide range of in-district and on-line training opportunities that we use for transportation employees and really across all employee groups.

  • MSGIA playground inspections and recommendations.

  • Department of Labor walk through with recommendations for boiler rooms, shops and labs

Together we have been able to do a consistent job that has produced some very positive results for our employees and overall school environment.
